Exciting 4×4 routes near Cape Town
With so many amazing Western Cape 4×4 trails dotted across the province, choosing our favourites wasn’t an easy task!
The off road 4×4 routes near Cape Town (and beyond) offer rugged mountain ranges, deep valleys, wild forests and challenging dongas.
While many of the best Western Cape 4×4 trails can be challenging, the breathtaking panoramic views and stunning landscapes make it well worth the effort!
This list features only a few of our favourite off road trails around Western Cape and will continue to grow as we continue to explore.

4×4 Trail Grades
Before we get to the good stuff, let’s first briefly run through the 4×4 trail grading criteria:
Grade 1: Easy – Suitable for 4×4 novices or 4x2s with differential lock
Grade 2: Easy to Moderate – Suitable for 4x4s and all-wheel drive vehicles with traction control
Grade 3: Moderate – Only suitable for vehicles with low range gearing
Grade 4: Difficult – Suitable for experienced drivers; low range and differential lock
Grade 5: Extreme – Suitable for experts, not for solo trips; low range, high ground clearance, traction control or differential locks – Recovery back-up essential

Our Favourite Western Cape 4×4 Trails
Atlantis Dunes 4×4
Grade: 2 – 3
Closest Town: Atlantis
With Table Mountain in the background and huge white dunes in the foreground, there’s no question as to why this is such a loved 4×4 trail.
Situated between Atlantis and Melkbos on the R27 towards Langebaan, this fun trail is not to be missed.
Trails range between 9 and 12 km, with braai facilities available to help you celebrate your accomplishment!
Take note: a permit is required for this route, which can be obtained at the City Council in Wale Street, Cape Town or from the Atlantis Municipality.
Kleintafelberg 4×4, Sandveld
Terrain: Sand, Mountain, Rock
Closest Town: Between Redelinghuys and Aurora
Sticking with sandy satisfaction, this moderate to advanced route, with fynbos-covered dunes and sandstone formations, offers approximately 5 hours of fun for 4×4 enthusiasts to conquer!
After the first long and bendy ascent, drivers will come across exciting sand obstacles to put their off road driving skills to the test.

Boegoeberg 4×4, Lambertshoek Farm
Grade: 2 – 4
Terrain: Mountain, Sand, Riverbed
Closest Town: Clanwilliam
Having achieved “Top Ten” status in the Drive Out magazine on numerous occasions, this old donkey wagon route-turned 4×4 trail is a must!
The main trail is around 20 km, which should provide you with approximately 6 hours of off road adventure.
Many popular landmarks in the Cederberg Mountain range can be seen from the viewpoint, and spectacular panoramic views will have your camera roll filled in no time!
Helderberg 4×4, Helderbergplaas
Grade: 2 – 4
Terrain: Gravel, Mountain
Closest Town: Somerset West
In the heart of the Cape Winelands, this 12 km route is great for amateurs and skilful drivers alike.
This circular trail is well marked, allowing you to skip certain routes that will bring the grade down to 2.
Conquer steep climbs and thrilling river crossings – this route can be extra challenging in wet conditions.
