This list features only a few of our favourite Gauteng 4×4 trails and will continue to grow as we continue to explore.
4×4 Trail Grades
Before the adventure begins, let’s quickly run through the 4×4 trail grading criteria.
Grade 1 is classified as “easy”, suitable for 4×4 novices or 4x2s with differential lock.
Grade 2 is “easy to moderate”, suitable for 4x4s and all-wheel drive vehicles with traction control.
Grade 3 is “moderate”, suitable for low range gearing vehicles
Grade 4 is “difficult”, ideal for experienced drivers
Grade 5 is “extreme”, suitable for off-road experts, not for solo trips – recovery back-up essential.
Gauteng 4×4 Trails
Grade: 1 – 4
Terrain: Clay, gravel, rocks, mud, sand
Closest Town: Bronkhorstspruit
This is one of the most loved Gauteng 4×4 trails thanks to the comprehensive off-road experience it provides.
Kungwini 4×4 offers an exciting training package, taking you along an obstacle track designed to get you ready for whatever the South African wilderness throws your way.
The training obstacle course presents v-shaped gullies, side slopes, 30 degree stall starts, water crossings and much more!
Trails vary from 1.4 to 8 km long, weaving through koppies and fantastic African ruins.

De Wildt 4×4
Grade: 2 – 5
Terrain: Rugged Mountain Tracks
Closest Town: Hartbeespoort
This rugged mountain trail is perfect for 4×4 enthusiasts looking to test their off-road skill.
Enjoy steep gradients with minor rocks, stepped slabs, some sand and water crossings.
When dry, the 14 km De Wildt 4×4 is suitable for novice drivers and soft roaders looking to appreciate the abundant wildlife.
When wet, the trail is transformed into a highly technical grade 5 trail.
All obstacles are provided with escape routes.

Grade: 2 – 3
Terrain: Water, mud, steep climbs
Closest Town: Pretoria
This is one of our favourite Gauteng 4×4 trails thanks to the fact that it’s only a short 2 kilometres from Pretoria.
The circular 14 km long trail leads through the Fountains Valley, taking approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete.
The self-drive Groenkloof 4×4 trail can be done all year round – with a braai spot available to celebrate your 4×4 triumph!

Bass Lake 4×4
Grade: 2 – 4
Terrain: Natural Track with Water Crossings, Steep Gradients
Closest Town: Henley on Klip
Bass Lake 4×4 is a self-ride route open 5 days per week, although this is greatly dependent on the weather.
Taking approximately 3 hours to complete, this 14 km long trail is tough enough for 4×4 enthusiasts to get their fix, while still being moderate enough for less experienced off-roaders to test their abilities.
There are escape routes on the more difficult sections of the Bass Lake trail.
Permits for this trail can be obtained at their outdoor shop, a map will also be provided.
