It’s that time of year when the seasons roll into each other and the country’s beauty is at an all time high. Flowers begin blooming again; the rains have restored the green fields. This is the time to go travelling and is ideal for long road trips with the family.
Indeed, this is when the flowers in Namaqualand show themselves in full bloom. After driving up the Namaqualand region, you must find them at the right time and spot.
To see these gorgeous flowers and the lands they’re on, you should take the approach from the direction of the sun. This is because the flowers face the sun and this will therefore guarantee you a better approach.
So what’s the best way to do this?
The recommended approach is for visitors to start in Springbok, then go south, along the N7, to Garies. To see the lands really show off, go on a series of drives that focus on the small towns of Garies, Springbok, Kamieskroon and Port Nolloth.
This benefits drivers in amazing ways: These areas lie only a few hours outside of Cape Town. This means you probably do not have to concern yourself with finding accommodation. You can simply use these towns as stop-off points. This trip makes it an ideal weekend away with the family.
Spring flower season is on from the beginning of August to the end of September. The last two weeks of August until mid-September make the best time to view them. (This is in particular for the Postberg section of the West Coast National Park, and the western section of the Tankwa Karoo National Park.)
You must make sure you’re doing this on a sunny day though; having an estimated time or month won’t be sufficient.
When sun is minimal, the flowers are unlikely to bloom. Come prepared with weather estimates and prediction. Be sure that you are prepared for queues and traffic, since there will be others taking advantage of this time, too.
The best way to get there is to drive yourself; further, it’s appropriate that you use the right vehicles like a bakkie. This means it might be necessary, if you’re taking such a long drive, to acquire necessary bakkie accessories – such as proper coating and secure locking for your canopies. Giving that weather might change; you want to prevent damage to your goods.
The Namaqualand is a stunning place, as is the rest of the country; but to take full advantage of its splendour, it’s best to know how.
